Merthyr Rising 2018 was a huge success, the biggest yet, with thousands of people coming together, some from as far away as Australia, to celebrate the rich cultural and political heritage of Merthyr Tydfil in a weekend of music, political debates, screenings, talks and family fun. The feedback received was excellent, with the general consensus being that ours is a warm, friendly and well-organised festival, due in no small part to our small army of amazing volunteers!
Planning the Merthyr Rising Festival is a huge task, but after a well-earned break, our committed team are back on it, determined to make Merthyr Rising 2019 the best festival yet!
Following on from a great weekend of music including The Alarm, Roland Gift (Fine Young Cannibals), The Blockheads and Dreadzone (not to mention many other national and local acts), the team are working on another eclectic line-up of great music, from big-name draws to local talent. We will announce acts for 2019 when confirmed on our social media channels.
The 2018 festival also saw the addition of a second stage, the SIMA tent, hosting everything from dance music to acoustic acts, which proved a huge success. We’re looking at a bigger tent for 2019, alongside a family entertainment area. Also new in 2018 was festival camping at Cyfarthfa Park which we’ll be looking to improve and expand with a more affordable package of £65 for a weekend camping and festival pass.
In keeping with the festival’s ethos, politics will play a huge part. In 2019 we are going to focus on delivering political talks, debates and screenings which have particular relevance to the working classes. We want to see more engagement from people who would not otherwise attend a political debate, whilst retaining the festival (and town’s!) radical tradition. The team are looking at creative ways to achieve this: we welcome thoughts and suggestions on this - it’s YOUR festival too!
As the festival grows, finances become ever-more important, but we strive to make Merthyr Rising an affordable festival for all. We are introducing a new ‘staged’ pricing structure, with early-bird weekend tickets available for a limited time for only £30, rising to £50 nearer to the festival itself.
We’re really excited about Merthyr Rising 2019: we’ve got some great things planned. We hope you will join us again and help us celebrate Merthyr’s radical tradition. Keep Rising!
