FESTIVAL ANNOUNCEMENT: Merthyr Rising 2021

Friday 9th October 2020

Over the past five years, the Merthyr Rising Festival has experienced incredible growth and acclamations.

The festival has attracted and welcomed people from around the UK and beyond. We've experienced amazing musical performances, inspiring debates and one of the biggest parties Merthyr Tydfil has ever had. For that, the organisers, volunteers and attendees can be proud.

The speed of growth was subject to sacrifice and hard work from so many. It didn't come without its difficulties and pressures to deliver a safe and successful urban festival. So, we decided to take a year off in 2020 to re-gather and build on a celebration that fits for Merthyr Tydfil but also for people from far and wide who celebrate our working-class culture and heritage.

Stepping into 2021 the festival has a developed a vision to become a unique festival of radical ideas, arts and music with international significance. The festival has the potential to do so much for the town's economy and perception with a joined-up collaborative approach with relevant partners.

The organisers will continue to work with trade unions who have been crucial to the viability and spirit of the festival along with the local authorities who are committing to support the efforts of the organisers.

New festival programme and events

In 2021 the festival will be divided over two weekends.

On May 22nd 2021, we will host our first dedicated 'Festival of Radical Ideas', and this will be a 3-day event that will feature thought-provoking talks, debates, film, culture snd arts. The event is in the spirit of the Merthyr Rising of 1831, where thousands of workers gathered just weeks before the uprising to discuss radical ideas and reform at the Waun Fair.

On May 28th, 2021, our customary music festival 'The Rising' will be launched by the Red Flag March to Penderyn Square. The 3-day event will celebrate the 'Rising' of the first organised uprisings that took place in the same location in 1831.
